Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre stands as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most ambitious community and high-performance sporting developments – a 32,000m² hub designed to support everyday recreation through to elite national and international events. Designed by Warren and Mahoney in association with Peddle Thorp and MJMA, and delivered on behalf of Crown Infrastructure Delivery for Christchurch City Council, the project required building systems that could perform at the highest level – structurally, acoustically, and in fire protection. KOROK was proud to contribute to this nationally significant development, supplying 300m² of KOROK® 78mm Galv Panel for key internal fire and acoustic separations within the complex.
The Challenge: Performance Across Scale, Safety & Sound
A building of this scale brings significant fire-safety and acoustic requirements. With large wet and dry zones, interconnected public spaces, high-performance training areas, and major event facilities, the project team required internal wall systems that delivered:
High fire resistance for critical separation zones
Reliable acoustic performance to manage noise transfer between pools, courts, fitness areas, and specialist spaces
Lightweight construction to integrate efficiently into the steel-driven structural design
Durability and compliance within a major civic facility expected to host two million visitors annually
This combination of acoustic control, fire protection, and constructability made KOROK’s systems an ideal fit.
KOROK® Solution
KOROK supplied 300m² of KOROK® 78mm Galv Panels, providing a robust fire- and acoustic-rated solution for internal separations within the facility. Why the 78mm Galv Panel Was Chosen:
High-Performance Fire Rating. Manufactured from zinc-coated steel shells conforming to AS/NZS1397:2001 with a Z275 coating, the panels offer reliable and tested fire protection essential for a public facility of this scale.
Excellent Acoustic Control. The aerated concrete core delivers strong airborne sound reduction — critical in a building that includes hydroslides, aquatic halls, gym spaces, and nine active courts.
Lightweight & Efficient to Install. At just 10.2kg per lineal metre, the 78mm panel is easily handled on a complex construction site, allowing rapid installation and smoother coordination with other trades.
Durability for Heavy-Use Environments.Designed to stand up to the demands of high-traffic public recreation centres and high-performance training areas.
The KOROK system contributed to meeting the project’s stringent fire-safety requirements while supporting the acoustic conditions necessary to create a functional and enjoyable environment across vastly different activity zones.
KOROK’s contribution helped ensure safe, durable, and high-performing internal environments within one of New Zealand’s most significant sport and recreation developments. The Parakiore facility will host community users, school groups, local clubs, and elite athletes alike – supported by dependable fire and acoustic separation systems designed to perform over decades of intensive use. KOROK is proud to support a project that not only enhances Christchurch’s sporting infrastructure but also delivers long-term social, economic, and recreational benefit for the region.
KOROK® has 2-way fire-rated wall systems for fire separation of Scissor Stairs or any Stairs.
KOROK® Scissor Stair Systems are proprietary, non-loadbearing, two-way fire-rated wall systems designed to provide fire and acoustic separation between independent stair flights within scissor stair configurations or other stair arrangements.
The system utilises 78mm thick interlocking KOROK® panels installed between two independent stairstringers to form a continuous fire-resisting barrier. Panels may be oriented vertically, horizontally, or in combination to suit stair geometry and construction sequencing requirements.
KOROK® Scissor Stair Systems are constructed using 78mm thick panels comprising roll-formed galvanised or colour steel outer shells with an aerated concrete core and interlocking tongue-and-groove profiles, forming a continuous, tightly sealed wall plane that reduces the risk of acoustic leakage between stair flights. The system is non-combustible and provides two-way fire resistancewhen exposed from either side.In fire conditions:
Horizontal fire resistance is achieved through a quadrilateral fire-resistant section formed between the two independent stairs
Vertical fire resistance is achieved through the wall-to-stair stringer boundary condition
KOROK® Scissor Stair Systems provide independently tested Fire Resistance Ratings up to –/120/120 and –/60/60 depending on configuration, while the 78mm interlocking panels deliver acoustic performance up to STC 76, meeting or exceeding NZBC Clause G6 requirements through their aerated concrete core and tightly sealed joint geometry.

KOROK Panels at Work in Raglan: Quieting the Glass Recycling Hub
We’ve just wrapped up a project at the Xtreme Zero Waste recycling center in Raglan, where we installed a “box” using our fire and acoustic panels around their glass recycling facility. The goal? To keep the noise down from the glass recycling process. The crew at Xtreme Zero Waste couldn’t be happier, saying, “The box looks awesome and works well.” It’s great to see our panels doing their job, making the space quieter and more comfortable for everyone involved. We’re stoked to have been part of this project and to see our panels making a difference right here in Raglan.
Costco Auckland, Standing Strong with KOROK® Wall Systems
Costco, the world’s second-largest retailer, opened its first New Zealand store in October 2022 at 2 Gunton Drive, Westgate, Auckland. Part of the expansive Westgate Shopping Centre, this new 15,000m² retail space features overhead parking for over 800 vehicles and includes essential services like a fuel station, tyre centre, food court, optometrist, and hearing aid services. This store is a key addition to the rapidly growing Northwest Auckland community, built on a challenging site during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a solid structure made of steel and concrete, Costco Auckland stands as a durable retail hub that incorporates the high-performance KOROK® wall system.

Engineered Fire and Acoustic Systems for Industrial and Commercial Spaces
KOROK® Warehouse and Retail Systems are high-performance, non-loadbearing internal wall systems designed to provide secure fire separation and acoustic control in industrial, warehouse, bulk retail, and intertenancy environments.
The system consists of interlocking steel-faced panels with an aerated concrete core, engineered for certified fire resistance, acoustic attenuation, structural reliability, and long-term durability. Panels can be installed vertically or horizontally and are suitable for both single-wall and twin-wall configurations. The systems have been developed in accordance with recognised Australian and New Zealand Standards and are substantiated through BRANZ testing and appraisal(Appraisal No. 559), ensuring verified and compliant performance.
How the System Works
KOROK® panels are roll-formed from zinc-coated steel strips and encapsulate a lightweight aerated concrete core. The interlocking tongue-and-groove profile forms a continuous sealed barrier that enhances both fire integrity and acoustic isolation.
System performance is achieved through the combined effect of panel mass and composite action, the engineered interlocking joint design, and a tested fastening and support methodology. Optional linings and cavity configurations can also be incorporated to meet specific Fire Resistance Rating (FRR) and Sound Transmission Class (STC) requirements.
Systems are non-loadbearing and must be supported by primary structural elements designed in accordance with NZBC structural requirements. Only genuine, tested KOROK® panels and proprietary components guarantee certified system performance. Substituting alternative products may compromise fire and acoustic ratings and cannot be supported or certified.
